Town Confirm Colgan is Second Keeper - Ipswich Town News

Town have confirmed that today's second goalkeeper signing is Barnsley glovesman Nick Colgan, as predicted by TWTD earlier this evening. The Irish international has signed a short-term deal until the end of the season.

Boss Jim Magilton told the club site: "Nick Colgan is a vastly experienced keeper who will provide strong competition for Stephen Bywater here over the rest of the season.

"I expect him to push Stephen all the way for his place and I'm delighted to have him on board.

"He is an international keeper who has been involved with the Republic of Ireland recently and will be another good voice to have around the place."

Colgan, who has settled his contract with Barnsley, started his career in England with Chelsea after moving over from Eircom League side Drogheda, but made only one senior appearance with the Stamford Bridge club between 1992 and 1998.

While with the Premier League side, Colgan spent time on loan at Crewe, Grimsby, Brentford, Millwall and Reading, before joining Bournemouth on a free transfer.

The 6ft 1in tall keeper was at Dean Court for a year but failed to play a first team game, moving on to Hibs where he played 147 matches in five years and also spent a season on loan at Stockport.

Colgan moved on to Barnsley in the summer of 2004 and made 119 appearances for the Oakwell club. In 2005 he went on a four-month loan at Dundee United.

Capped nine times by the Republic of Ireland, Colgan played only once for Barnsley this season, a 4-1 home defeat to Coventry.

Bywater's loan move from Derby County until the end of the season was confirmed earlier today, while new Macedonian signing Velice Sumulikoski is still awaiting international clearance.
