Mariner: I Still Get Goose Pimples - Ipswich Town News

Town legend Paul Mariner has paid tribute to the effect the Blues crowd had on May 6th 1978 at Wembley as Sir Bobby Robson's side won the FA Cup final against Arsenal. The former England striker says recalling walking out of the tunnel still gives him goose bumps.

Mariner told TWTD in an exclusive interview for issue 92 of the fanzine, which is out on Sunday: "The moment I'll never forget is when we walked out of the tunnel. There was a bank of blue and white behind us.

”You know they talk about the hairs on the back of your neck standing up? My God! It was like a wall of sound which hit you! It was unbelievable. I'm getting goose pimples even thinking about it now. It gave the team an incredible lift.

"It was really, really important for us, that was. We were the underdogs and it didn't half give us a boost.”

Issue 92 of the fanzine is a 1978 special which also features an interview with George Burley in addition to the in depth chat with Mariner. As well as those of the players, TWTD 92 includes fans' memories of the game and the cup run, as well as revealing some interesting ways people managed to get tickets and stories of fans travelling across large areas of the globe to be at Wembley on that great day.

The fanzine will be available from our (hopefully) sun-burnt sellers around the ground prior to Sunday's kick-off or online, via either a six-issue subscription or single issue, here.
