Beattie to Get Medal at UEFA Final - Ipswich Town News

Town legend Kevin Beattie will finally receive his medal for Town's 1981 UEFA Cup win at this year's final, according to reports this morning.

Beattie, who played in 12 of Town's ties that year, missed the final victory over AZ Alkmaar due to a broken arm, but after a campaign which included a petition set up by Cult Publishing, the people behind last year's autobiography, UEFA agreed to mint the central defender a medal.

News that the crusade had been successful first broke late last year, but previously no date had been set when the ex-England star would receive the medal.

UEFA president Michel Platini, who played for St Etienne against the Blues during the 1981 run, will present Beattie with his medal at this year's final at the City of Manchester Stadium on May 14th.

Beattie said: "Some friends started a campaign to get me a medal. The fact that Michel Platini wants to hand it over himself makes it even more special."

The 54-year-old will meet up with his team-mates from the 1978 FA Cup final and manager Sir Bobby Robson on Monday for the 30th anniversary reunion.
