Jim: No Ameobi Bid, But Enquiry to Newcastle Made - Ipswich Town News

Boss Jim Magilton has finally commented on Town's interest in Newcastle striker Shola Ameobi, denying that he has made a bid but confirming he has made an enquiry regarding the 26-year-old. Yesterday, reports in the North-East said any proposed deal had collapsed with Ameobi less than keen on the switch.

But Magilton says he is still waiting to talk to the former England U21 striker: "We have made an enquiry about Shola but not a bid. The lad has just got married and has been away on his honeymoon which we have not wanted to interrupt.

"When he gets back I'm hoping to be able to speak to him personally. A lot of things so far have been done through intermediaries, but until I can speak to the lad myself we can't move on.

"There is no doubt he has a lot of ability and, if he shows the desire and the passion to want to come here, then we will make an offer and move to bring him in.”

Town are believed to be ready to pay £2 million up front for Ameobi, plus another £1 million on appearances and an additional £500,000 if the Blues reach the Premier League.

Ameobi turned down a move to former loan club Stoke earlier in the summer and, according to reports yesterday, is waiting to hear whether any other Premier League sides are interested. Also amongst those watching the situation are Norwich City, although the price appears to be well beyond their means.
