Jim: No News on Garvan Extension - Ipswich Town News

Boss Jim Magilton says he is yet to hear whether midfielder Owen Garvan will sign his new deal at Portman Road. The Irishman, who has a year left on his current terms, has been offered a contract aimed at keeping him at Town until June 2011.

Magilton said: "I have heard nothing from Owen. We offered him a contract extension before the end of last season and I am still waiting to sit down and discuss it with him.

"Hopefully, he recognises that his own ambitions match those of Ipswich Town. If not, we will have to do something about it.”

Garvan, 20, is currently back in Dublin and is due to return to Playford Road with the rest of the squad next Wednesday for the start of pre-season training.

If the midfielder decides against signing his deal, then a number of Premier League sides are likely to be interested. Middlesbrough, Everton and Wigan are amongst those to have been linked in recent months.

With Garvan's deal up in a year's time, Town would almost certainly seek to cash in on the Irish U21 international now if they are unable to secure him on a longer contract. Next summer the midfielder's value would be vastly reduced, although the Blues would be entitled to compensation as the Dubliner would still be under 23-years-old.

Meanwhile, Magilton has confirmed that new signing Gareth McAuley could be the club's new captain: "I am delighted to sign Gareth and he is under consideration to take over from Jason as club captain.

"We will be assessing the situation in the days and perhaps weeks ahead before naming a new captain.”

Elsewhere, Alan Gow's move to Burnley from Rangers is reportedly close to completion. The former Falkirk man has been linked with the Blues on a number of occasions over the years and Town were said to have been alerted to the midfielder's availability by his proposed switch to Turf Moor.

Gow is a makeweight in the deal which will see striker Kyle Lafferty join the Gers, Town having failed in a bid for the 20-year-old.

Another player on the way to Burnley appears to be Scunthorpe striker Martin Paterson. The Northern Irishman was linked with Town in March.
