Town in Talks to Sign Greek International - Ipswich Town News

Town are in talks with German side Nuremberg regarding Greek international striker Angelos Charisteas, according to a report on a national newspaper's website this evening. The 28-year-old headed the goal which won his country Euro 2004.

The proposed move is said to be worth £2.5 million with Charisteas having been keen to play in England for some years.

The 6ft 4in tall striker was born in Serres and started his professional career with Aris Salonica, one of Town's 1981 UEFA Cup opponents. A loan spell at Athinaikos followed before he joined Werder Bremen in 2002.

In 2005 Charisteas moved on to Ajax in Holland but after one season left to sign for Feyenoord, where he spent another year.

Last summer Nuremburg paid the Rotterdam club €2.5 million for his services, Charisteas signing a three-year deal.

Town were previously linked with Charisteas back in November 2001 when then-European scout Simon Hunt watched Aris beat Ethnikos Asteras 4-2. Reports in Greece at the time quoted Hunt as saying: "We have to see him play two or three times more before we make a final decision."

Hunt recently rejoined the Blues as the club's new international scout and it appears the recruitment of Charisteas could be his first contribution towards Town's push to return to the Premier League.
