Town are reportedly hopeful that former Bolton and Real Madrid man Ivan Campo could decide on a move to Portman Road. The former Spanish international is considering terms offered by the Blues after meeting with club officials earlier in the week.
Boss Jim Magilton said: "If we can match his expectations, we could strike a deal and if we do it would be good for both parties."
Campo, who was released by Bolton at the end of last season, watched Monday's friendly with West Ham and was given a tour of Town's facilities on Tuesday before holding meetings to discuss his move.
The 34-year-old is unlikely to be a Town player in time to face Preston on Saturday with the Blues' backline still the area where Jim Magilton has the biggest choices to make.
Youngsters Tommy Smith and Pim Balkestein faced West Ham, but Magilton has says Alex Bruce could still come into his thoughts, despite having dropped into the reserves for much of pre-season: "Alex Bruce may play Saturday, but I am not going to make changes for change's sake.
"We had a team chat on Tuesday and to pick holes in the back four would be unfair. You defend as a team, and we gave the ball away cheaply for a couple of goals, and one poor clearance out of defence.
"West Ham had eight shots and scored five goals, and the calibre of our opposition was exactly right at this time.
"Tommy Smith coped well against West Brom where they had just one front man, but to play against Dean Ashton and Craig Bellamy is a different proposition. It is maybe a case of keeping Tommy, and Pim Balkestein, in the team.â€Â
