Town Hoping for England Game - Ipswich Town News

Town chief executive Derek Bowden says the club are hopeful they will host another England U21 or U19 match in the next few years. The Blues have already agreed to host an English Schools Cup game in two years' time.

Bowden said: "There is a chance that we will get another game. We have had them in the past, so it is a possibility we can get a younger age group game.

"We would love to host one. We have agreed to host and English Schools Cup game here in 2010 and we will continue to do more if we can, but nothing further is planned.”

Portman Road staged a full international friendly against Croatia in 2003, which England won 3-1.

The stadium has also been the venue for international football at lower levels, with England U21 matches against Switzerland (1980, 5-0), Romania (1985, 3-0), Albania (1989, 2-0), the Czech Republic (1998, 0-1) and Moldiva (2006, 2-2) all proving popular. An U23 match against Switzerland was staged in 1972.

In 2001/02, the England U19s beat Germany 3-1, while the ground also played host to a 1959 pre-Olympic Games friendly between Great Britain and the Caribbean FA ahead of the 1960 Games in Rome.
