Town Announce Loss - Ipswich Town News

Town have announced a loss of £5.5 million for the year ending June 2008. The loss was expected in the wake of Marcus Evans's takeover at the end of 2007.

Chief executive Derek Bowden said: "It's something we were prepared for following the investment by Marcus Evans.

"It's a wholly predicted loss so in that respect it isn't worrying at all."

Since the takeover, the Blues have spent a significant figure on transfers - although the summer's dealings aren't included in the current results - while Bowden recently told TWTD that this season's wage bill is around £11 million, up from £5 million pre-takeover. A much larger loss is likely for the year ending June 2009.

Bowden says Evans's businesses remain strong despite the financial downturn: "The Marcus Evans Group isn't immune to recession, but it continues to trade profitably, it's a very strong global business, so has more protection than most.

"The acquisition of the club and the money that was injected into the club at the beginning of last year was put there to invest in players, and we will continue to underwrite the investment that's been made."

Town have previously confirmed that there is money available to spend on players in January and that Evans is willing to inject further cash into the club in order to win promotion to the Premier League.
