Wickham: Record an Honour - Ipswich Town News

Record-breaking striker Connor Wickham says it is a great honour to have become Town's youngest ever first team player during Saturday's game against Doncaster Rovers. Wickham was 16 years and 11 days old when he came on as a sub, beating Jason Dozzell's 25-year-old record by 46 days.

Wickham told the club site that he met up with the previous record holder prior to the match: "I spoke to Jason before the game and he wished me well.

"It's a great honour for me to be the club's youngest ever player and now I just want to stay involved and play as much as I can for the first team. Once you get a taste of it, you want it more.

"I thought I did OK when I went on. I wasn't nervous, it was just excitement at getting on there and I had half a chance when the ball came across, but I thought I was offside and the ball just got away from me.

"Some of my friends from school came along to give me support. My family were at the game as well and it was a special moment for me, but obviously the result was very disappointing.”

The England U16 international says he will not be getting carried away with his early introduction to first team football: "I know I have to keep my feet on the ground but I think I am pretty level-headed and I've got the right people around me to keep me that way."
