Burley Has Bid In - Ipswich Town News

Town boss George Burley has admitted that he is waiting to hear back after lodging a bid for a new midfielder. If it is accepted the new man will be come Town's second signing of the season with innumerable names suggested as his identity. The Town manager has also admitted that there has been interest in his players from elsewhere.

Regarding the bid Burley said: "We are waiting to hear if a bid has been accepted. Once that happens things could move fairly quickly. Otherwise things are pretty much the same as they have been and we are waiting to hear back from clubs. We have been linked with a number of players but I don't want to get involved in any sort of speculation about who we may or may not be interested in."

Burley added that he had received enquiries for some of the squad, with Scowcroft the player with the most rumours surrounding him at present. The Town boss said: "It is inevitable that we are going to get calls asking about the availability of players. We have a lot of good players here so they are bound to come in for attention. But we are looking to strengthen our squad and we hope to do that over the next few weeks."

On the midfield front loads of names are in the hat. Jason Koumas of Tranmere has been watched but the £3 million price-tag is likely to put Town off while the latest two names are Birmingham's Stan Lazaridis and Manchester United's Quinton Fortune. Mark Kennedy has been mentioned a number of times as has team-mate Danny Tiatto. Gert Verheyen and Hassan Kachloul now look to be out of the picture with Verheyen having agreed a new deal at Club Brugge and Kachloul likely to go to the highest bidder, unlikely to be Town. Other sources suggest that Town may be after a player currently playing in continenalt Europe.

Town are also being linked with 24-year-old JC Roda striker Marc Nygaard. The Blues are reported to be amongst a number of clubs watching him play for Denmark against the Czech Republic this evening. Given the earlier purchase of Pablo Couñago and Nygaard's quoted price of £6 million we really can't see this happening.

Meanwhile George Burley refused to be drawn on the story that Andy Marshall might be a Town target. A month or so ago the keeper was linked with Town, but this seemed to have nothing in it when he said he wasn't prepared to sit around on the bench for a couple of years, as he surely would at Town.

However, if the rumours that Bolton want Keith Branagan to return are true then Marshall might be a Town target and might feel he can't refuse an offer to move to Portman Road. One thing is certain he is not staying at Carrow Road.
