Football League Introduces Seven Subs - Ipswich Town News

Football League chairmen have agreed that sides can name seven substitutes next season. Teams will be able to use three of those seven, as was the case in the Premier League and FA and Carling Cups last term.

The League chairmen voted on the proposal, made by Derby County, at their annual conference in Portugal this week, which was attended by Town chief executive Simon Clegg.

The Football League has also agreed that any club that falls behind with its employee-related payments to Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC) will face a transfer embargo until their debt is cleared.

League chairman Lord Mawhinney says this will prevent clubs from over-extending themselves: "It is only right that we do not permit clubs that are unable to meet the costs associated with their existing playing staff to make further new player commitments.”

Clubs have also given the League written permission to have access to their tax records held by the HMRC.
