Milton Looking Forward to Masters - Ipswich Town News

Town's Academy Co-ordinator Simon Milton is looking forward to this Sunday's Central Masters tournament at the Nottingham Arena (6.30pm onwards). Milton is amongst eleven Town stars of the past involved in the six-a-side competition which is screened by Sky Sports.

Milton told TWTD: "I watched it for the first time last Sunday, I watched Bradford and Newcastle, Sunderland and Middlesbrough. It was good, I think the standard's pretty good and you certainly don't want to be embarrassed as there are some top quality players playing. Peter Beagrie stood out for me playing for Bradford. Obviously, he's still playing for Wigan so he was fitter than everybody."

Of his own abilities at small-sided football Milton said: "I always enjoyed five-a-side, but then so does every player because there's not so much running! Bontcho's playing and he loved five-a-side too and is very good at it."

The football isn't the only attraction for the players: "It will be good to meet up with a few old friends. I played with most of our team so it will be good to see them again. The other good thing is we're playing teams like Leicester and Steve Walsh is a good mate of mine so it will be good to meet up with the over-35s in the other squads too."

Of the Town squad (see below) only Bontcho and Mark Brennan have been playing regularly, Bontcho for Hendon and Brennan for Dagenham and Redbridge, although he has been out injured for a while. Simon Milton has trained as part of his Academy duties while others like Kevin Wilson and Ian Atkins are involved in management and Jon Hallworth only recently retired.

It seems Milton's performance will be eagerly watched by his current charges at the Academy: "A lot of people here can't wait for it to be on. Some of the youth team have been talking about how they are going to watch it and are going to give me some abuse if I don't play well!"

Town squad: Ian Atkins, Mark Brennan, Jon Hallworth, David Lowe, Russell Osman, David Lowe, Trevor Putney, Kevin Wilson, Bontcho Guentchev, Simon Milton, Steve McCall. Manager: Kevin Beattie.
