Murphy: I\'m a Striker - Ipswich Town News

Daryl Murphy says he is hoping to show Sunderland boss Steve Bruce that he should have been playing him as a striker and not a left midfielder during his loan spell with the Blues. Murphy has spent much of his time at the Stadium of Light playing in his less favoured midfield role.

Murphy said: "You would hope that if I can score the goals here then if I went back to Sunderland I would get the chance as a striker. But all I’m trying to do is enjoy my time here and score as many as I can.

"Ever since I have been playing football I have been stuck out on left midfield, just because I have a left foot and I can cross a ball.

"It’s a handy option for managers because there are a lot of strikers wherever you are. At Sunderland there were some very good strikers ahead of me.

"It was a relief to be playing up front, I had forgotten what it was like to score a goal.

"Coming here to play as a striker was a big thing for me. I have been wasted as a left midfielder and I just wanted the chance to play as a striker.”

Murphy, whose Black Cats contract is up in 2012, netted his first goal in two years in the opening minute of his debut for the Blues against Middlesbrough on Saturday and will be hoping to add to his total at QPR on Tuesday.
