Bruce Set for Surgery - Ipswich Town News

On-loan Town defender Alex Bruce is set to undergo a hernia operation having picked up the injury during his full debut for Leicester last weekend. The Republic of Ireland international hopes to be back in action well before the end of the season.

Bruce said: "I just felt a pop in my stomach, it is the only way I can describe it. I was devastated. I felt I was doing OK. We had just scored and everything was going well but then I went into a tackle and I just felt it pop.

"It looks like a hernia and I will have it sorted out on Tuesday. It is a routine procedure and not like the hernia operations of old, which used to take six weeks to heal. It is more keyhole surgery now so I am only looking at between five days and, at the most, two weeks out.

"It is not as bad as I first thought. It is the same surgeon who operated on Jordan Stewart of Sheffield United and he was back in five days.”

Bruce, who is contracted to the Blues until the summer of 2011, joined the Foxes on loan in January and is due to remain at the Walkers Stadium until the end of the season.

Meanwhile, former Blue Sammy Morrow has been banned for three months by FIFA after being caught betting on matches in which he had played.

Now with Coleraine in his native Northern Ireland, Morrow admitted making the bets, which also included games during his time with Derry City.

The 25-year-old, who came through Town's academy and made one senior appearance for the Blues as a sub in a Carling Cup defeat at Notts County in 2003, will miss the rest of the Northern Irish season.
