Wickham Nets for England - Ipswich Town News
Striker Connor Wickham was on target for England’s U17s as they beat Sweden 4-0 in their opening European Championships elite qualifying group game at Northampton’s Sixfields on Saturday afternoon.
Wickham turned on the edge of the area and hit a left-foot shot into the corner of the Swedish net to put England in front in the 21st minute.
It was the 16-year-old’s fifth England U17 goal in his eighth game at that level. England next take on Malta at Burton Albion’s Pirelli Stadium on Monday and Slovakia, again at Northampton, on Thursday.
Manager Roy Keane says he is "fairly confident” that Wickham will sign his first professional contract with the Blues when he returns from international duty with his 17th birthday on Wednesday.
