Clegg Visits Wattisham - Ipswich Town News

Town chief executive Simon Clegg spent time at Wattisham Airfield earlier in the week in his role as an ambassador for Help for Heroes, the Football League’s official charity partner.

Clegg gave a signed framed Ipswich Town shirt to the outgoing Commander of Wattisham Station, Colonel David Turner, and met soldiers from 656 Squadron of the Army Air Corps, who are being deployed to Afghanistan soon.

The Town chief executive, a Major with the Colchester-based 7th Parachute Regiment, Royal Horse Artillery, said: "I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to visit Wattisham to demonstrate our support, and indeed that of the whole football community, for the soldiers who are playing such a key role in overseas operations.

"My role as a Football League ambassador is one that is very important to me and the visit gave me the chance to invite members of the Station, especially 653 Squadron who will have just returned from Afghanistan, to come and enjoy some ‘R and R’ with us at Portman Road for our last game of the season, where we will also be aiming to raise significant funds for the Help for Heroes charity.”

Town’s last home game of the season, against Sheffield United on Sunday 2nd May, has been designated the club’s official Help for Heroes match with various activities planned involving members of the Armed Forces and Help for Heroes volunteers.
