Keane Backing Goalline Technology Call - Ipswich Town News

Boss Roy Keane expects football to introduce goalline technology in the years to come to prevent controversial incidents such as Frank Lampard’s ‘goal’ during England’s World Cup defeat to Germany on Sunday.

Keane said: "I’m sure technology will come into the game over the next few years. It has to because of the money involved, not just at World Cup level. At Championship or Premiership level the stakes are so high and it’s got to be looked at.

"It’s in other sports and, as much as I love the game, we’ve got to be open-minded and if something can improve the game we have to look at it. But it’s up to FIFA to sort it out.”

Keane feels that England’s players are more to blame for their early return from South Africa than manager Fabio Capello: "For everyone to keep criticising the manager I think is crazy. Six weeks ago he was a top manager and all of a sudden he’s not the man any more. It’s an amazing business we’re in.

"Capello’s a brilliant manager. The players have to look at themselves as well. Let’s not kid ourselves, they get away with murder because everyone seems to blame the manager.

Keane says speculation regarding the players’ unhappiness with Capello’s 4-4-2 formation had little to do with the weekend 4-1 thrashing: "The goals England conceded on Sunday were nothing to do with systems or getting overrun in midfield but basic defending.

"It’s a very simple game football, but when big teams lose they always look to criticise the manager or the system or the tactics. I thought it was nothing to do with that on Sunday.

"To question Capello’s crazy, he’s an absolutely brilliant manager and they are very lucky to have him and I think he should stay, 100%.”

The Blues boss wasn’t surprised at England’s poor showing and feels few of the squad performed during the domestic season: "Tell me the players from England who had a good season. Wayne Rooney had a brilliant season, but you look at the goalkeepers. David James at Portsmouth, I don’t they had great season. Robert Green, West Ham, they just about stayed up. Glen Johnson at Liverpool did OK.

"John Terry had his issues, I don’t think he had a great season, as much as Chelsea won the double, that was down to the fact that they had some world class attacking players.

"Upson, who played yesterday, from West Ham didn’t have a great season, Ashley Cole has only just come back from injury, to be fair to the boy. Steven Gerrard didn’t have a great season with Liverpool.

"I think James Milner had a good season, Gareth Barry I thought was very average for Manchester City last season, Emile Heskey scored three goals for Villa last year. So you tell me these players are world class players, but they’re not. There’s probably only Wayne, and Wayne still hasn’t done it on the world stage.”

Keane says he expects Brazil or Argentina to carry off the trophy.
