Finidi Starts Training! - Ipswich Town News

Finidi George has begun training with Town's fitness coach Simon Thadani today. The Nigerian is in Ipswich and will sort out any remaining details with Town imminently.

It is thought Town will call a press conference on Monday to introduce him and announce his signing.

The player says he has become tired after spending most of the last couple of weeks flying about: "I have been doing a lot of travelling lately and it will be good to train and work on my fitness. I am a bit behind the rest of the Ipswich players at the moment. I have only had two games so far and I hear the club has played eight pre-season games. I will now work hard and I would love to be involved in the first Premiership game at Sunderland — but it will be up to the manager to decide."

The Nigerian revealed that he was concerned he might not come to Town: "I was a bit worried that the deal was not going to go ahead, but then I was delighted that everything was sorted out. It’s not London or Manchester, but I came here and liked what I saw. Ipswich is a good club — I know that from what people have told me — and I look forward to playing for them. It is not a big city, but when I was shown round the area I really liked the area. I have not seen a lot of the team on television. I don’t know why it is, but they don’t show much English football. They only tend to show the goals. But I am also impressed with the fact that the team finished fifth in the Premiership last season. That was a tremendous achievement."

Finidi said the other day he had an offer from Chelsea a while back, and it appears they weren't the only English club interested in him: "Chelsea and Liverpool both wanted to sign me, but after I had a couple of offers they didn’t go through. That was about two years back. Kanu told me I would like it here and he told me that Ipswich played good football. He was certain I would enjoy playing with them, and when I spoke to Martijn he also had good things to say about Ipswich."

The new man added: "I will give Ipswich everything I’ve got. I have been looking forward to playing for them since they first showed an interest in me and I wish it could have been sorted out earlier."
