McAuley Wins Cap But Northern Ireland Draw - Ipswich Town News
Central defender Gareth McAuley won his 25th Northern Ireland cap as his side disappointingly drew 1-1 with the Faroe Islands in Toftir this afternoon. The former Blues skipper was used as an emergency striker in the closing minutes as his team desperately went looking for a winner.
The 30-year-old played in his usual right-back role for his country and wasn't far from scoring his second international goal with a stooped far post header just before the break.
Ex-Town loanee David Healy came on as a second half sub, prior to one-time Blues target Kyle Lafferty equalising Christian Holst’s goal for the home side.
Northern Ireland had started their Euro 2012 campaign strongly with a victory in Slovenia and a home draw with Italy.
Meanwhile, both Márton Fülöp and Tamás Priskin were unused subs as Hungary beat Finland 2-1 in Helsinki.
Brian Murphy was left out of the Republic of Ireland 18 for their 1-1 draw in Slovakia.
