Wark on Derby - Ipswich Town News

TWTD columnist John Wark has given us his view on tonight's clash with Derby. Wark's regular column will be on the site tomorrow. Here's how John sees it:

I wasn't surprised Derby got a result at home on Saturday. I thought that with it being Ravanelli's first game and the first match of the season that the crowd would get well behind them.

No disrespect to Blackburn but that's a good game to get first match. Derby were a bit fortunate to get the result as Blackburn had a goal disallowed and one or two good chances second half.

One Derby player I really rate is Malcolm Christie. He'll be a big threat to Ipswich tonight. I rate him very highly, he's so alert. Ravanelli is one of those players who can win you a game with a freekick or whatever, but he's not going to run through brick walls for you. For me Christie is more of a threat. He's always on defender's shoulders.

It is a game that Town really have to win. Sides like Derby and Charlton, as I said last week, are teams that Ipswich definitely have to beat at home.

One memory I have of playing against Derby was the first time I was sent off. It was at the Baseball Ground on one of my first games there. I was playing in defence and I tackled Charlie George and he just reacted and headbutted me! So as I got up I kicked him in retaliation and we both got sent off. That was in the days when the Baseball Ground was all sand. It was the second last game of the season, but becuase suspensions weren't carried over to new seasons in those days I never missed a game.

Ipswich should win tonight and if they get another result on Saturday the season will have got off to a good start.

class="storytext">New Town signing Finidi George says fans can expect to see a lot more of him than they did at the Stadium of Light on Saturday. Finidi was surprisingly used as an attacker on Saturday as Town fell to a 1-0 defeat.

The Nigerian said: "I prefer it out wide, but I'm just happy to play where the manager wants me to. I'm just pleased to be in the team. It's early days for me at this club and I've got to get used to the game over here and improve my fitness for English football."

He says Town should have taken their chances better at Sunderland: "It was a disappointing result for us. I always want to win, but we had our chances and could not take them. From a personal point of view, for a first game it was not too bad. These are very early days for me in English football and I was extremely tired at the end."
