Beattie Hits Out at Barnsley Cheers - Ipswich Town News
Town legend Kevin Beattie has hit out at fans who cheered Barnsley's players each time they touched the ball during a period in the second half of the Blues’ 3-1 defeat to the Tykes. The former England defender said he’d never seen anything like it in his time in football.
Beattie felt it did the Town players no favours: "I didn‘t appreciate what I heard. In fact I was disgusted. Hearing the opposition being cheered would have put our lads’ heads down and affected their concentration.
"If I’d been out there I would have confronted them and said ‘Lift us, don’t knock us down’. OK, the side might not have been playing well, but fans should not do that. I’ve never heard anything like at any ground or any match I’ve played in or witnessed.”
The former central defender added: "You should never cheer the opposition. True fans keep behind their team and do their bit to try and get them to improve.”
