Wickham Wins Awards - Ipswich Town News

Town striker Connor Wickham was named the Young Player of the Year and Championship Apprentice of the Year at tonight’s Football League Awards in London.

The Blues frontman was up against Watford’s Will Buckley and Arsenal’s Henri Lansbury, who is on loan at Norwich, for the Football League Young Player of the Year Award and Adam Thompson of Watford and Crystal Palace's Wilfried Zaha in the Championship Apprentice of the Year category.

Speaking last week, boss Paul Jewell said Wickham, who turns 18 on the final day of the month, is having no trouble handling all the plaudits and awards he is receiving: "He’ll probably get a BAFTA as well!

"He’s in for that many awards that I lose track - Young Player of the Year, Apprentice of the Year, Chef of the Year, everything. It’s a lot for him to take on but I think he takes it in his stride and he’s a very level-headed lad.”

Wickham will be with the England U21 squad this week for their friendlies against Denmark and Iceland.

QPR’s Adel Taarabt won the Championship Player of the Year award with Peterborough’s Craig Mackail-Smith being given the League One gong and Bury’s Ryan Lowe winning in League Two.

Crewe boss Dario Gradi received a Contribution to League Football Award for his 28 years with the Railwaymen.
