Wickham Amazed to Win Awards - Ipswich Town News

Connor Wickham said winning the Football League Young Player of the Year and Championship Apprentice Player of the Year gongs at last night’s Football League Awards was "amazing". The 17-year-old won in both categories in which he was short-listed.

Wickham told the club site: "To be nominated was great but to win both awards was just amazing. I was surprised but very grateful and I really enjoyed the night. I've got to buy my mum and dad a new cupboard now though to put the trophies in.

"It's been a good season for me and I just want to keep improving, keep working hard and doing my best for Ipswich."

The Hereford-born striker, who will be with the England U21 squad this week for their friendlies against Denmark and Iceland, says he hopes to push Town up the table on his return: "I'm looking forward to going away with England and then after that helping Ipswich finish the season as high as we can."

Boss Paul Jewell was pleased for Wickham: "Congratulations to Connor, we're obviously delighted for him.

"We know about his potential and it's further evidence of the progress he is making. Let's hope the awards he has received lately are the first of many for him.

"It's important that he continues to keep his feet on the ground and we have a part to play in that. He's a very level-headed lad though and he knows that he has lot of hard work ahead of him."

Academy manager Sammy Morgan added: "I'm pleased for the boy. He's done well and it's good news for the club as well."
