Jewell: An Honour for Gareth - Ipswich Town News

Boss Paul Jewell says it’s a great honour for Town defender Gareth McAuley to have been named the captain of his country for this evening’s Euro 2012 qualifier against Slovenia (Sky Sports One/HD1 7.30pm).

Jewell said: "It's a great honour for Gareth. I watched him play against Serbia [on Friday] and he did exceptionally well. I'm pleased for him as I am for all the players.”

The Town boss also had words of encouragement for Republic of Ireland pair Darren O’Dea and Damien Delaney: "Darren O'Dea has been very patient here.

"He obviously would have liked to have played more but his professionalism has been excellent and it just goes to show you what can be achieved if you prepare properly.

"I saw Damien yesterday when he got the call-up and wished him well. It's good for players and good for the club to see them representing their countries."
