Old Boy Lowe Set to Join Staff - Ipswich Town News

Former Blues striker David Lowe is set to join Paul Jewell’s coaching staff. Lowe, a player at Portman Road between 1988 and 1992, is currently the first team coach at League One Tranmere Rovers.

The Liverpudlian, who looks likely to run the reserves with his former team-mate Chris Kiwomya having left the club, was a member of Jewell’s backroom team at Wigan, where coached the youths and the reserves, and Derby, where he was academy manager.

Lowe was also briefly caretaker-boss at Pride Park after Jewell’s sacking and in his one game in charge led his side to a 1-0 Carling Cup semi-final first leg victory over Manchester United.

The 45-year-old joined the Blues from Wigan in June 1987 for a fee of £80,000 and was Town’s top scorer in 1987/88 when he scored 18 goals and again two years later when he netted on 13 occasions.

Overall, Lowe made 144 starts and 15 sub appearances while at Portman Road, scoring 45 times before moving to Leicester for £250,000 in July 1992, having spent much of the previous Second Division title-winning season on loan at Port Vale.

Lowe later returned to Wigan and also played at Wrexham and Rushden and Diamonds, then worked for the PFA, prior to joining up with his former Wigan team-mate Jewell on the Latics’ and Rams' staff.

After working part-time for Manchester United, Lowe took on his current role at Tranmere last August.

Lowe’s spell at Prenton Park means he will be very familiar with Rovers left-back Aaron Cresswell, who is understood to be on Paul Jewell’s summer wish-list.
