Jewell Confirms Ingimarsson Deal - Ipswich Town News

Town boss Paul Jewell has confirmed that released Reading defender Ivar Ingimarsson has agreed a one-year deal with the Blues. TWTD reported on Friday that the 33-year-old Icelander had undergone a medical at Portman Road last week and was set to join the club.

Jewell says he has no problem with the one-time Wolves man’s advanced years: "At Bradford we were called 'Dad’s Army', I’ve always had experienced defenders in my side.

"His age doesn’t concern me, he played 25 games for Reading last season and he knows the game inside out.”

The Blues manager added: "I had a chat with Ivar while we were both in Spain and it's all sorted out, he will be with us for the first day of pre-season.

"He's an experienced player who knows what the Championship is all about.

"When I look back at my time at Bradford and Wigan, I had players there like De Vos, De Zeeuw, Matt Jackson. They were older heads, an integral part of the team.

"Ivar knows what this league is all about. He knows what it takes to be successful and I'm delighted that he will be with us next season."

Capped 30 times by his country, Ingimarsson began his career in his home country with Valur and IBV before joining Torquay United on loan in October 1999.

A £200,000 switch to Brentford followed a month later, then in July 2002, having been linked with George Burley's Blues, the 6ft ½in tall defender joined Wolves on a free transfer but made little impact at Molineux before moving on to Reading for £175,000 in October 2003.

Since then Ingimarsson, a close friend of former Blue Hermann Hreidarsson, has been a hugely influential figure at the Madejski Stadium, making 276 starts and five sub appearances, scoring 12 goals and also captaining the side. Injuries, however, limited his involvement during 2010/11.

Town are also understood to have made an offer for Preston’s Irish international Sean St Ledger and have been linked with Bournemouth’s Jason Pearce with Paul Jewell likely to be looking for two central defenders this summer to replace the exiting Gareth McAuley and his deputy Troy Brown, while youngster Tom Eastman has also left the club.
