Town Draw Northampton at Home - Ipswich Town News

The Blues have drawn Northampton Town at home in the first round of the Carling Cup. The sides most recently met in the same competition last season at the fourth round stage, also at Portman Road, Town winning 3-1.

Carlos Edwards, Damien Delaney and Tamás Priskin scored the goals as the Blues came from behind to win after a deflected Liam Davis shot had put the League Two side in front.

Chief executive Simon Clegg is pleased with a home draw after first round trips to Shrewsbury and Exeter in the last two seasons: "Our fans have done a lot of travelling in cup games over recent years so I'm delighted for them that we have a home draw in the first round.

"We had around 2,500 Northampton fans at Portman Road when we played them last season and we're looking forward to welcoming them again in August."

Historically, the Blues have won 12 games between the teams (nine in the league), 10 (seven) have been draws with Northampton winning 10 (10).

First round ties will be played in the week commencing Monday 8th August with Town's game almost certainly on the Tuesday.

Birmingham City have been handed a bye to round three as they are involved in the Europa League, which means newly-promoted Crawley Town and AFC Wimbledon will play a preliminary match with one of the former Blue Square Bet Premier sides progressing to the first round.

Town's Championship fixtures will be announced at 9am tomorrow when they will be available on TWTD.
