Sheepshanks Players Strike is Illegal - Ipswich Town News

David Sheepshanks warns the PFA Chief that he may have a fight on his hands if the players’ strike is to go ahead. The Premiership may take the PFA to court to prevent such action as Sheepshanks considered the strike illegal: "My understanding of the legal situation is that the PFA cannot call players out on strike because they aren't in dispute with the clubs".

PFA chief executive Gordon Taylor is looking for a percentage of TV money, rather than a lump sum as is the case at the moment. The argument is that the PFA requires more money in order to look after players’ interests when they retire from football. However David Sheepshanks points out that there was £2.5 million available last year and the full amount wasn’t distributed so therefore more funds aren’t required. He also thinks they are being unfair and says "The PFA have to see we contribute in other ways like the pension funds and the development of grass-roots football".

The strike is said to go ahead in November if the PFA do not receive 5% of TV revenue, as opposed to the 1% on offer. While Town are on TV 4 times this month against Torpedo home and away, Blackburn, and Leeds on Sunday, once in October against West Ham on Sky (pay per view), the only match that may be affected by the strike is Ipswich v Bolton on 18th November.
