Richard Wright was back in goal for the Blues for the first time since his summer 2010 exit as Town's reserves drew 1-1 with Colchester in a behind-closed-doors friendly at Playford Road this afternoon. As revealed by TWTD last week, Wright, who was joined in the side by trialist Ibrahima Sonko, is back training with Paul Jewell’s squad for the second time this summer, having spent a week with Cardiff City.
Boss Paul Jewell has previously played down the chances of Wright, who was released by Sheffield United at the end of last season, rejoining the Blues for a third spell, despite Town needing another keeper as back-up for David Stockdale and Arran Lee-Barrett.
Speaking earlier in the month prior to Wright’s time with the Bluebirds, the Town manager insisted that the ex-England man was just keeping himself in condition: "We were doing Richard a favour because he lives in the area.
"He was just keeping fit and he was very impressive in training but he’s gone on trial with Cardiff for a few days.”
In today's game, Steven Gillespie netted for the U’s on the hour with midfielder Jamie Griffiths on target for the Town second string with 10 minutes remaining. Colchester included former Blues Tom Eastman and Wayne Brown in their side.
