Edwards in Court Today - Ipswich Town News

Right-back Carlos Edwards is due in court today to answer charges of driving whilst disqualified and without insurance. On Saturday, Edwards’s wife gave birth to premature twins weighing 2lb each in Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge.

The Trinidad and Tobago international, who could potentially face a jail sentence, was arrested and charged with the offences late last month with a statement from Suffolk police at the time reading: "Carlos Edwards, aged 32 and of Century Drive in Kesgrave, has been charged with driving whilst disqualified and driving without insurance after officers stopped a BMW on Dodson Vale in Kesgrave earlier this morning, Monday September 26th.

"The BMW has been seized by police. Edwards is due before Ipswich Magistrates on October 10th 2011.”

Town also released a statement: "We can confirm that Carlos Edwards was arrested for driving while disqualified on Monday, September 26th.

"We understand there are significant mitigating circumstances but this is now a matter for the police and we will be making no further comment until due process is complete.”

Edwards himself released a statement through the Trinidad Football Federation making reference to the complications during his wife's pregnancy: "My wife is in the hospital at the moment and that’s the reason as she usually has been the one driving me before this.

"Our fingers are crossed that all will be well with her. I will just continue to focus on my football at the moment.”

Earlier this summer, Edwards was banned from driving for a year and fined £7,650 having admitted a number of driving offences at South East Suffolk Magistrates’ Court.

The former Sunderland man had pleaded guilty to two counts of driving without a valid licence, two counts of driving with no insurance and two counts of driving without an MOT.

He had also admitted a further count of a failure to give information about the identity of a driver.
