Former Blue Pablo Couñago says he would rather continue playing abroad rather than return to Spain. The 32-year-old, who is currently without a club, has confirmed that he has been targeted by Tenerife, as reported yesterday, but expects to have other options overseas in the new year.
Couñago, who spent two years with Malaga in between his spells with Town, says he hasn’t always enjoyed his time in Spanish football and would prefer to continue playing elsewhere: "I am hoping to have options with foreign clubs.
"In the summer I had some proposals, but didn’t manage to make them concrete. Now I am hoping that some possibilities are there in January and February."
Despite this, the former Spanish U21 international, who was released by Town in the summer after spending last season on loan at Crystal Palace, says he’s flattered that Tenerife made contact: "That a team such as Tenerife are interested is always good, but it’s in my mind to play for a foreign team.”
While not totally ruling out a further spell in Spanish football, Couñago says that at the moment he sees himself playing out the rest of his career elsewhere.
The former Celta Vigo man rejoined the Blues after leaving Malaga on a free transfer in the summer of 2007, having previously been at Portman Road between 2001 and 2005.
The striker made 147 starts and 95 sub appearances across his two spells, scoring 62 goals.
