Naylor No to Contract - Ipswich Town News

Richard Naylor has hinted that his Town career may soon becoming to an end by refusing to sign an extension to his contract. Recent weeks have seen the Leeds-born striker out of favour at Portman Road with Crystal Palace, Bradford and Barnsley all thought to be looking at him.

Manager George Burley said: "Richard has spoken to me about his situation. He is not a first team regular at the moment, but I wanted him to stay at the club and offered him an extension to his current deal. He said he would prefer to keep his options open and I appreciate how he feels. I need a strong squad, but at the same time you have to be fair to people as well."

Naylor says the deal, until summer 2003, was just too long for him to commit to: "That's quite a long time and I didn't think it would be fair to sign to sign a new one, just for the sake of it."

The striker added he is looking for first team football and that Town would let him go if the right offer came in: "The gaffer understands my situation and has said they won't stand in my way if the right offer comes in."

Speculation also continues over the future of Jamie Clapham. TWTD hears that his situation may be cleared up in the next week or so and that a move from Town looks very much on the cards.

Moves for either or both Clapham and/or Naylor are likely to see George Burley look to the transfer market. The Town boss says he has a couple of targets at present, one possibly a member of the Swedish national side who he watched in a recent international.
