Henderson: Staying at Pompey Better for My Development - Ipswich Town News

Portsmouth keeper Stephen Henderson says he decided against a move during the transfer window as he felt it was better for his career to stay at Fratton Park where he has established himself as first choice this season having been a regular sub at previous club Bristol City.

On deadline day, Town had offers for Henderson and team-mate Joel Ward accepted by Pompey, while a further bid for Jason Pearce was turned down, with Newcastle also reported to have been keeping an eye on the Republic of Ireland U21 keeper.

Henderson, 23, told the Portsmouth News: "I felt, for my development, I was better staying at Portsmouth. I’ve been waiting in the shadows too long. But I’ve been given the opportunity to actually play here and I didn’t want to jeopardise that.

"I’m not saying I would have but I definitely wanted to stay and felt I owed the fans something.

"I’m pretty happy with how things have gone but I think I’ve got a lot more to show going forward.”

"Of course, the financial side of it needs to be sorted and we’re aware of that. But we just have to get on with it and do the fans and the club proud.”

Meanwhile, Pompey, who are due in court regarding a winding-up order relating to unpaid PAYE on February 20th, are reported to be close to going into administration for the second time in two years.
