On-loan goalkeeper Alex McCarthy is refusing to rule out in-form Ipswich’s chances of reaching the play-offs.
Town are currently 11 points adrift of sixth-placed Birmingham, who have played one game less, but McCarthy said: "You never know what might happen.
"It is often said that in this league any team can beat any of the others and we have shown that by doing the double over West Ham and taking a point from Southampton the other night.
"Sometimes it is a question of which team turns up. We are a different team to what we were a few weeks ago. It took longer than we thought it would to gel together and pick up points but we have settled into a good rhythm recently.”
Town have banked 16 points from their last seven outings and, realistically, would need to at least maintain a similar ratio over their remaining 12 to have any chance of breaking the 70-point barrier and possibly gatecrashing the top six come the end of the campaign.
McCarthy, who has made five first team appearances since arriving from Reading in January, added: "If we can keep picking up three points at home and continue to collect a few from our away games we could have a sniff of the play-offs.”
But even if Town miss out, a top six finish is the very least that McCarthy’s parent club — currently the most consistent in the Championship after a run of seven straight victories — look capable of achieving.
The England U21 international keeper, whose loan is up on April 11th, added: "They are flying at the moment. I wouldn’t even rule them out when it comes to automatic promotion or even finishing the season as champions.
"Obviously we did them a big favour with our result at Southampton the other night and I had a text message from the gaffer [Brian McDermott] to thank me for that.”
