Peters Set for Town Exit - Ipswich Town News
Town’s longest-serving player Jaime Peters looks set to leave the Blues this summer with manager Paul Jewell confirming that the club are looking to terminate the Canadian international’s contract. Peters was left out of the squad for the pre-season tour of Holland along with striker Nathan Ellington, who Jewell says still has time to resurrect his Town career.
Jewell said: "We’ve only got so many places [on the tour], we can’t take everybody. Jaime Peters, I think he knows the club are looking at possibly terminating his contract. He needs to go and play some football.”
Peters has been with the Blues since impressing in a trial in 2004, but last season made only the one appearance, in the Carling Cup defeat to Northampton.
In January, SPL side St Johnstone would have signed the 25-year-old on loan but the move abroad in a footballing sense was prevented by the three club rule, Peters having already played for the Blues and loan club AFC Bournemouth within 12 months. The Perth side may well be amongst the clubs monitoring Peters’s situation.
Despite not travelling to Holland, Jewell insists Nathan Ellington, who like Peters has a year left on his contract, can break back into the Town side: "I decided not to bring him, but it doesn’t mean it’s the end of his career by any stretch of the imagination.
"He would argue that he hasn’t had a chance since he’s been here, which I totally agree with, but you’ve got to earn that chance and Nathan hasn’t done well enough over the season to be top of the pecking order as far as the forwards are concerned.”
