Blues boss Paul Jewell wouldn’t comment one way or the other on reports that he recently held talks with former England international striker Emile Heskey regarding him joining Town.
Jewell said: "There are always reports. I’ve spoken to a number of players and agents over the summer. I don’t hide the fact that we want another forward and at least two other players in the squad.
"I don’t really want to discuss what I do privately. I understand you guys [the media] have got a job to do and you can always speculate, but sometimes conversations - whether it’s between me and Emile Heskey or somebody else - until there’s anything definite they’ll always remain private.”
Jewell, who was similarly guarded regarding his interest in Doncaster’s George Friend, is believed to have sounded out free agent Heskey, 34, about joining the Blues but the potential deal is not thought to have gone any further than that.
Meanwhile, Derby frontman Steve Davies, who has been on the Blues’ radar since May but with the clubs unable to agree a fee, was left out of the Derby squad which lost 2-1 to Mansfield last night.
Speaking earlier in the week, manager Nigel Clough said he expected the situation regarding the former Tranmere man to become clearer nearer the end of the week. The Rams are believed to want a fee of around £1 million with the Blues reportedly willing to pay around half that.
