Chambers: Wilson a Tremendous Player - Ipswich Town News

Transfer target Kelvin Wilson would be a terrific addition to the Ipswich squad, according to the current Town player who knows him best.

New addition Luke Chambers and Wilson, currently with Scottish champions Celtic and believed to be the subject of a failed bid by manager Paul Jewell, were together at Nottingham Forest.

Chambers said: "Kelvin is a tremendous player. He was fantastic at Forest and he’s a very good player.

"But I think we, as players, don’t get involved with all that. We only read it in the papers and stuff like that. All we can do is focus on the boys who are in that dressing room, the staff we have here and everyone pulling together to hopefully get us off to a good start to the season.”

Chambers is delighted to be at Portman Road and admitted that halfway through last season he was beginning to think he would benefit from a change of scenery after four and a half years at the City Ground.

He added: "I felt that I was getting to the stage where I might need a new challenge. It was a difficult season for everyone at the club and we didn’t achieve what we wanted to.

"Nigel Doughty, the owner, died and it was a very sad time for us all to get through. From that moment forward the club was in shutdown mode. They were looking for new investors and until the new investment came along they were unable to offer any sorts of contracts.

"At the end of the day I have a young family and I’ve had to look elsewhere to go and play my football. But I couldn’t be happier than being here. It’s been a fantastic first month for me and I’m really looking forward to the new season. I’m really enjoying my football at the minute, which is something I maybe missed out on last season.”

Chambers may have joined a club that finished 15th in the Championship last season, just four places higher than Forest, but a month at Portman Road has convinced him Town will climb to a much higher position in the campaign ahead.

He added: "The focus I have seen in that dressing room since I’ve been here is that all they want to do is go out and win and be successful. Everyone is doing the right things to achieve that. No corners have been cut this pre-season at all. We have come back from the summer in great shape and the gaffer has been delighted with that.

"From the first day that I arrived everyone has hit the ground running. I’d recommend Ipswich to anyone because from my experience over the last month, being around the area and being around the football club, the place is geared for success and hopefully we can come up with it this season.”
