Jewell and Staff Hold Blackpool Post-Mortem - Ipswich Town News

Boss Paul Jewell was planning to hold a post-mortem with his staff in the wake of Saturday's 6-0 loss at Blackpool. With the Capital One Cup tie at Carlisle on Tuesday, the Blues stayed at a hotel in the North-West after the heavy defeat.

Jewell said: "We’ll definitely sit down as a staff and look at it, analyse it. But I just think they were cheap goals. It’s not just the goals [themselves], it’s times we give goals away and the manner we give goals away.

"I don’t think our keeper Scott Loach has had too many saves to make. I looked at the stats at half-time. We had more crosses than them, we had more shots than them and yet we found ourselves 2-0 down.

"The key element that I keep coming back to is that we’ve got to be better in their final third and we’ve got to do better in our final third, simple as that.”

He added: "It’s not going to be a pleasant night tonight [Saturday], that’s for sure. But we’re here, we’ve got beaten 6-0, we’ve got to deal with it.

"We’ve got to dust ourselves down and look forward to training [on Sunday] and look forward to the game.

"We can’t do anything about this game. We can learn about it, you learn about certain individuals, but we’ve got to move on to Tuesday.”

Jewell insisted the youth of his side had no bearing on the manner of the defeat: "I’m not going to blame the young squad for that because I thought some of the goals were basic errors.

"The first one is a mistake from absolutely nowhere - there’s no danger. The second one we’re playing football in the wrong area. We want to pass the ball but to pass the ball on the halfway line with a minute [of the half] to go is not what we’re after. That was an experienced player.

"You get through to half-time at 1-0, you never know. Even at 2-0, the next goal’s vital and once they scored [the third the game was over].

"They’re a good team Blackpool, they’ve been together for quite a while, they’ve got players who are playing with a massive amount of confidence and Ian Holloway’s done a brilliant job here. You look at their bench and they’ve got players who can change the course of the game on it.”

Seasiders’ midfielder Thomas Ince scored two, assisted three and was even involved in the early stages of the sixth and Jewell says the 20-year-old, the son of ex-England skipper Paul, has made significant progress recently: "He’s a good player. He’s come on leaps and bounds in the last year. Ian’s got a lot of flair players who are playing with a lot of confidence.

"They’ve got the master himself, Kevin Phillips, who is an example to all young players. His movement and his understanding of the game is second to none. I’m sure Thomas Ince and Matt Phillips and all these players will learn a lot just training with Kevin.”

The Blues are set to train at Fleetwood today, Jewell having decided to stay in the North-West having worked out that his squad would spend 24 hours on their coach if the travelled back home after Blackpool and then made the return trip to Carlisle. They trained at Stoke’s facilities on Friday.
