Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony admits that he doesn’t know whether Posh midfielder George Boyd will be joining the Blues on loan this week. MacAnthony’s club accepted a £250,000 offer from Town for the 26-year-old towards the end of the transfer window but the move broke down after the former Stevenage man was unable to agree personal terms at Portman Road.
Asked by a Town fan on Twitter whether Boyd would join the Blues this week, MacAnthony conceded that he didn’t know: "I have no idea buddy, to be honest.”
Despite the deal breaking down, like Town's initial approach for Posh striker Paul Taylor, the switch has always seemed likely to be revived with all parties — the Blues, Peterborough and Boyd — appearing to want the move to go through.
The sticking point has been the Scotland B international’s current terms of more than £10,000 a week, which makes him Peterborough’s highest-paid player.
Town were unwilling to stretch to wages close to his current earnings or agree the four-year contract the player is understood to want.
Last week, Peterborough director of football Barry Fry indicated that Posh would be willing to negotiate a loan with a view to a permanent deal in January, Blues boss Paul Jewell said the switch could be revisited, while we understand Boyd is very keen to join his former team-mate Taylor at Portman Road.
However, the addition of at least one, probably two, centre-halves remains Town's priority and an improved offer to Boyd may depend on the cost of bringing in those players. Talks are reported to have taken place with Southend's Bilel Mohsni today, while Stoke's Matthew Upson is amongst Jewell's top central defensive targets.
Chatham-born Boyd is out of contract at London Road at the end of the season and is transfer-listed having turned down a new deal.
