Luke Chambers insists that morale in the Ipswich camp remains high and that he and his colleagues will face fellow strugglers Charlton in confident mood at Portman Road today.
The central defender, signed when his Nottingham Forest contract expired in the summer, believes it is far too early in the season to panic and is adamant that second-bottom Town are capable of climbing the Championship table sooner rather than later.
Chambers, who will be 27 next Friday, said: "I’m obviously disappointed with the points tally but I think the performances in every game, except for the second 45 minutes against Blackpool, have done us fairly proud.
"But I think from the chances that we have created — something like 17 in each of the last two games alone — to only hit the target twice against Wolves the other night just isn’t good enough. It’s criminal.
"We were totally in control until they got their goal and it looked like it was only a matter of time before we scored. It knocked the wind out of us a little bit when we went behind.”
Newly-promoted Charlton will be trying to avoid a fourth successive league defeat, while Paul Jewell’s team are on a run of five games without a victory if you include the Capital One Cup KO at Carlisle.
Chambers added: "We want to win, simple as that. We’ll go out there to win three points and if we can’t get three we’ll get one. If we can’t get one it’ll be none so we’ll have to move on, tick that game off and there will be 39 left.
"It will be a difficult game but it’s still early days and we can’t get too carried away. Charlton have some good players but it’s no secret that in this division every team has some good players.
"They will still be on a bit of a high from coming up last season. They have players who have played at this level before and done very well so we’re well aware of their threats and their strengths.
"But in our position we’ve just got to concentrate on what we’ve got as a team of 11 and a squad of 18. All we can do is to try to keep doing the right things that have bought us our chances in the previous games and tighten up at the back a little bit.”
