Jewell: Even the Best Have Lean Spells in Front of Goal - Ipswich Town News

Town’s failure to take their chances in their last two games has been a big frustration for Blues boss Paul Jewell, but he says even top players have lean spells in front of goal.

Recalling his playing days at Anfield, he said: "You see goalscorers sometimes and they can’t buy a goal. Top, top strikers.

"I remember being an apprentice at Liverpool and Kenny Dalglish couldn’t score. I remember us doing a training session where we were squaring balls for Kenny to hit into an open net, and I’m talking about from seven yards. Out about 50 he hit around two in.

"It happens to the best in the world and once he got one in a game he went on.

"He was a fantastic player but that’s the situation for strikers, they go on runs. Something needs to fall for one of our strikers or one of our players and I feel the team will move on from there.

"It’s not going to just happen for us, we’ve got to make it happen and the way you make it happen is not to be frightened of getting in there.

"Don’t be frightened of missing. It’s not nice to miss, but if you don’t put yourself in positions to miss chances, you definitely won’t score them.”
