Chambers Surprised By Lacklustre Start - Ipswich Town News

Ipswich new boy Luke Chambers admits he is surprised at the team’s lacklustre start to the current campaign — and that the strikers are not entirely to blame for the fact that Town are the lowest-scoring team in the Championship.

Looking ahead to today’s visit of Charlton, third from bottom and only ahead of Paul Jewell’s team on goal difference, he said: "The lads scored fairly frequently last season.

"But it’s not any one department. Chances are falling to everyone at the minute and they’re not all half-chances, they are glaring opportunities that we are passing up.

"The longer it goes on during a game, the more the other team stays in the game and they are always going to get a chance of their own. We are limiting teams to three or four chances and they are nicking a couple of goals, which shows you how close this division is.

"But I think that if we keep playing the way we have been surely it’s only a matter of time before these chances get converted into goals.”

Town are without a home win this season and last earned all three points at Portman Road on March 31 this year when Daryl Murphy’s goal soon after half-time was enough to see off Barnsley.

Chambers added: "We have to focus on getting the first goal in a game and if we do get that first goal there is only going to be one winner.

"I know we’ve lost the last two games but it’s a crazy situation because we were the better team in both — we created the most chances and had the most possession.

"We have to now start finishing off these chances. We could talk about it all day but at the end of the day if you don’t put the ball in the back of the net you are always going to be in danger of losing games.

"We’re all looking forward to Saturday. There is going to be a little bit of added pressure for us because of the position we are in but I think the lads are going to embrace that.

"They are not going to shy away from it — I’ve seen no evidence of that happening. We’ve had a couple of fresh injuries but we’ve still got more than enough in the dressing room to go out and win the game.

"Charlton are just above us but it’s still early days and we can’t build it up too much. We have to go out looking for three points and that’s what we should be coming away with.”
