Frontman DJ Campbell says he’s quite happy to be a lone striker as well as a loan striker. With the Blues for three months from QPR, the 30-year-old impressed up front on his own in the Blues’ 2-1 home defeat to Cardiff — scoring a somewhat fortuitous debut goal — and looks set to keep his place at Hull on Saturday.
"I don’t mind. I’ve done that before. I did that all the season before last at Blackpool,” Campbell told Radio Suffolk.
"I was the lone striker and I scored a lot of goals in the Championship and the Premiership for them. I haven’t got a problem whether I'm on my own or with a partner.”
Campbell, who has spent the international break working on his fitness, says he’s at Town to score goals and gets annoyed with himself when he doesn’t take opportunities: "That’s my job! I’ve always been hard on myself when I’ve missed chances, even when I’m not fit. I expect to score most of the chances that I get and I have done over my career.
"It’s normal pressure to me and I love pressure like that and I love playing football. That’s all I want to do really — play football and enjoy myself.
"I know I’ll do that here and hopefully I’ll score the goals that will push us up the league.”
Campbell looks certain to be one of the permitted five domestic loanees included in the squad at the KC Stadium. The Blues currently have six - Campbell, Stephen Henderson, Danny Higginbotham, Massimo Luongo, Richie Wellens and Bilel Mohsni. Luongo would appear the most likely to miss out.
Daryl Murphy (Celtic) and Guirane N'Daw (St Etienne) don't count as they're from 'foreign' associations.
Meanwhile, centre-half Tommy Smith has begun his lengthy trip back to Suffolk after his international games with New Zealand, 2-0 and 3-0 victories over Tahiti.
The All Whites need just a point from their next World Cup qualifier against New Caledonia at home in March to confirm a play-off with a CONCACAF nation in November 2013 for a place at the World Cup in Brazil the following year.
Smith tweeted as he set off on his trek in the early hours UK time: "The start of a 34-hour trip. Christchurch-Sydney-Dubai-London-Ipswich.”
