Bike for Bobby Reaches Town Today - Ipswich Town News

Former Newcastle United full-back Robbie Elliott’s Bike for Bobby charity cycle challenge in honour of Sir Bobby Robson is due to reach Portman Road at around 3pm this afternoon. Elliott and his friend Phil Gray, a triathlon champion, are visiting all the ex-Blues and Magpies boss’s clubs to raise money for the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation and Breakthrough Breast Cancer.

The duo have already taken in Sporting Lisbon, FC Porto, Barcelona, PSV Eindhoven, Wembley and Fulham. They will end their journey at Newcastle United on Sunday, when the Magpies play West Ham United, having travelled 3,500 miles in 25 days.

They are set to be met at Portman Road by chief executive Simon Clegg as well as Mick Mills and Bryan Hamilton, who played for Sir Bobby during his time at Portman Road. Elliott and Gray were met at Fulham by Sir Bobby’s sons, Mark and Paul.

Town fan Dean Harris is working as part of the support team: "When I was asked to get involved I jumped at the chance — Robbie and Phil are putting their bodies on the line each day of the challenge for two fantastic charities, the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation and Breakthrough Breast Cancer and it is also a wonderful tribute to the great man himself.

"Sir Bobby left his mark on every club he was at and obviously nowhere more so than at Ipswich — it would be fitting if the Ipswich fans can lead the way in donating to the cause in his honour!”

A documentary is being made about the trip, while a gala dinner will be held at the Hilton Newcastle Gateshead on Sunday 25th November.
