Having paid musical tribute to Barack Obama, Irish band The Corrigan Brothers have turned their attention to new Blues boss Mick McCarthy. The Limerick-based three-piece gained international notoriety with their song There’s No One as Irish as Barack Obama in 2008.
Ahead of a trip to the States for the president’s second inauguration, the band — who are comprised of brothers Gerard, Brian and Donncha Corrigan - have composed a new song honouring Mick McCarthy and Town entitled Mick McCarthy and the Tractor Boys.
Lead singer Gerard explained why they decided to write it: "We are great sports fans and we like to write sports songs, our Rory McIlroy World Number One song had a big impact in the USA earlier this year but we have a particular admiration for Mick McCarthy.
"We were staying in the same hotel as Mick and the Irish squad a number of years ago when he was still Irish manager and we met him and found him to be a real gentleman, very friendly and engaging, so we have followed his fortunes ever since.
"We are delighted he has taken over at Ipswich, a team with a rich history of Irish connections, from [former manager] Mick O’Brien back in 1936 to Mick McCarthy in 2012 and we think Ipswich will be very successful with Mick at the helm. "We are now officially Tractor Boys fans, though we always have had a soft spot for them since the great movie Escape to Victory connected Pele, Sylvester Stallone and most of the Ipswich squad in the early eighties.” The song is released on November 26th with the Corrigan Brothers touring the UK in May 2013 when they intend to visit Suffolk: ”We hope we are swinging by Portman Road next May when promotion is being sealed,” added a somewhat optimistic Gerard.What to read next:
