Campbell Happy Whatever System Boss Chooses - Ipswich Town News

DJ Campbell is equally as happy to go it alone or partner another striker in the Ipswich attack. The diminutive frontman, on loan from QPR until January 5th, has alternated between operating as a lone striker and dovetailing with another loanee, Celtic’s Daryl Murphy.

Four-goal top scorer Campbell said: "I don’t mind if I play alongside someone or on my own. I’ve played all sorts of systems throughout my career — it was 4-3-3 with Blackpool in the Premiership — and I like to think I can do both.

"It’s a question of what the gaffer thinks will work best. It’s been okay in some games with Murph in a 4-4-2 and other times it hasn’t been so great.

"We can only do the best we can for each other and try to do what the gaffer wants us to do to the best of our ability. It can take a bit of time to gel and I like to think that when it does we will be winning more games and moving up the table.

"We’ve shown against Birmingham and Burnley what we can do, but we’ve also shown our bad side at Palace and Leicester. Once we find a bit of consistency I think we’ll be fine.

"But we don’t have a lot of time as a lot of the players’ loans are up in January. We need to kick on now — no more excuses — and start winning games.”

Campbell, who could partner Michael Chopra up front for the first time today, finds it hard to pinpoint the main reasons for Town’s lack of success this season but has not ruled out a lack of mental strength within the squad.

He added: "It could be that. When the confidence is low because the results haven’t been good, a lot of things creep in.

"But we’ve got some good players here and after we beat Birmingham and Burnley you’d have thought the confidence would have been better.”

One thing Campbell is certain about is that Town made the right decision to appoint Mick McCarthy as Paul Jewell’s successor.

He added: "Mick is a great guy and so is coach Terry Connor. They are the sort of people you want to work with.

"You can’t mess with Mick — what he says is usually right — and he has lots of experience at this level, as well as in the Premiership and at international level.”
