Tommy Smith is aiming to improve his scoring ratio for Ipswich after netting seven times in his 84 senior appearances to date.
Smith, whose only goal in the current campaign came in the 3-1 Capital One Cup home win over Bristol Rovers back in August, admitted: "It’s a goal of mine to score more regularly.
"Going up for set pieces, you always want to get on the end of things. I was aware I’d scored seven so far in my time with Ipswich and I’d like to build on that tally for sure.”
Smith saluted the part that midfield team-mates Guirane N’Daw and Luke Hyam played in the 3-1 midweek home win over Nottingham Forest with both claiming their first goals for the club.
He added: "They set the standard for the team. They both played really well and hopefully there will be more of the same from them during the remainder of the season.
"Things have been very positive since Tuesday. There’s always a buzz after a good win and Tuesday night was no different. The aim now has to be to build on that and push ourselves up the table.”
Smith, 22, partnered Luke Chambers at the back against Forest, when he was able to resume his favourite role on the left of the central pair, whereas he was positioned to the right of Danny Higginbotham in Town’s previous game, the 1-1 home draw with Peterborough three days earlier.
He said: "With me being left-footed it is more natural for me to play on the left but I played on the right a lot last season as well and I’m comfortable there. Obviously, though, for clearances and stuff it’s easier when I’m on the left-hand side.
"Regardless of where I play I’ve always tried to be vocal and when you have more senior players alongside you it’s a case of tending to take their lead.
"They have more experience but I feel that as I am getting more experienced myself I’m trying to take a lead. I find myself bossing people around, which is what the gaffer says he wants his centre-halves to do.”
