U18s Beat Bristol City in Youth Cup - Ipswich Town News

A superb first half strike from Tom Winter (pictured) gave Town a 1-0 FA Youth Cup third round victory over Bristol City at Ashton Gate in a game where they were up against it for the entire second half.

Town went into this game having already played their opponents earlier in the season losing 0-4 at Playford Road.

The Blues, watched by manager Mick McCarthy and his assistant Terry Connor, started brightly with the best chance of the opening five minutes, Mark Timlin shooting wide of the right post from inside the area.

As they started to get into the game it looked as though the Robins were going to take the lead with Rhys Jordan having plenty of time at the back post but a poor shot across goal saw the ball go wide.

Despite City getting into the game it was Town who took the lead. Kyle Hammond laid the ball back to Tom Winter on the right corner of the box who then curled it up and down over the keeper into the left corner of the goal.

The home side came close to an equaliser with a square ball from Wes Burns going straight to Connor Lemonheigh Evans but the midfielder scuffed his shot into the hands of keeper Michael Crowe.

City came out the stronger team at the starting the second half and should have been level with Lemonheigh Evans having a free header at the back post post. Fortunately for Town his effort was straight at Crowe.

Town's first shot of the first came from Jack Marriott cutting inside from the right but he elected to shoot rather than pass and hit the ball straight at the keeper.

Town's goal continued to live a charmed life and in the 62nd minute there was another free back post header, again for Lemonheigh Evans but on this occasion he headed wide.

Amir Berkane got a let off from the referee with a clear foul as the last man only gaining him a booking with Town still struggling to get into the game.

Town's best chance of the half came from a counter attack with Matthew Clarke putting Marriott through on goal but the in-form striker hit the ball straight at the keeper.

With five minutes remaining Omar Sowumni put in a fantastic sliding challenge to prevent Burns from shooting inside the box.

Town played positive attacking football in the first half and got a deserved goal, but throughout the second half they rode their luck with Bristol City missing several good chances.

However, they go on to the fourth round and if they can reproduce their first half performance they can go far in this competition.

Centre-halves Sowumni and Clarke, who is still a schoolboy, deserve a lot of credit for their performances throughout the game with the pair preventing Town from conceding with vital tackles.
