Striker Daryl Murphy says it would be brilliant if Town could keep DJ Campbell at Portman Road beyond the end of his loan on January 5th. The QPR man has now scored eight goals in 12 games for the Blues, netting two in Saturday’s 3-0 victory over Millwall in which Murphy, who is on loan from Celtic for the season, scored the other.
Murphy said: "We will have to wait and see what happens, but if there is any chance we can keep him it would be brilliant.
"He is easy to play with, he is busy, quick, sharp and a poacher who will always score goals and it is just a case of me trying to help him out.”
He added: "Football is a simple game. You don’t need to complicate things when we are playing like that. It is the big man and small man up front and you stick with it.”
The Irishman was pleased to be back in the XI having made an impression as a substitute in the previous two games: "I’m glad to get a start which I wasn’t expecting.
"I was expecting to be on the bench and that the gaffer would pick the same side, but I got a chance and he said it was up to me to make an impact, which I feel I have done. Thankfully I have scored and put in a shift.”
Murphy was disappointed not to get a second goal via one route or another: "I knew it was penalty when [Millwall defender Shane Lowry] stuck his hand out but I finished anyway just in case he played on so I was gutted not to score, but at the same time I’m delighted I have won a penalty for the team and we have scored.
"I asked DJ last time to take the penalty but he was not having any of it. When he missed that I thought I might be in with a chance this time but again he was not having it.
"I let him have it and when you score like that and the confidence is so high then you let him, I’m not too bothered.”
Overall, he felt it was an excellent display from the Blues: "It’s a clean sheet, three goals and a decent performance.
"It is up there with the best performances I have been involved in. We kept our shape and worked hard and even though they had a few chances we were absolutely brilliant.
"Everyone was on top of their game. Stephen Henderson is a good keeper, we all knew that but the run we were on, confidence was low and we made it easy for teams to score, so it wasn’t down to him.
"You can see now after winning a few games, the confidence is coming back. We are scoring few goals and Hendo has pulled of four or five good saves.”
The Waterford-born striker was pleased to give supporters something to shout about: "The fans have been brilliant and stuck with us. They have been right to boo us a few times, so they deserved that and I’m delighted we did it for them.”
Meanwhile, Millwall's on-loan West Brom striker Chris Wood celebrated turning 21 on Friday at his New Zealand room-mate Tommy Smith’s house after Saturday’s game.
Smith tweeted the frontman’s whereabouts in case anyone was looking for him: "And for everyone asking where [Chris Wood] is, he is at my house still struggling to get out of my pocket ;-) Love you really mate!”
